Monthly Wellness Recipe: How to Make Golden Milk

Golden Milk and cinnamon

What is Golden Milk?

Trying to stay well in any health profession can be a real challenge but one of my favorite go to health treats is golden milk. I was working at the beautiful Arcana Gardens and Greenhouses when a co-worker, a herbalist who has endlessly inspired me to seek plant healing, told me about this delicious elixir. What I love about it is that it’s not only good for me, it’s absolutely delicious!

If you haven’t heard of turmeric’s incredible anti-inflammatory properties you’re missing out! Turmeric is not only amazing at reducing inflammation but the curcumin, the active ingredient that we are absorbing, has shown to reduce joint and arthritis pain, boost cognitive health and assist with digestive health. It’s important to pair this tonic with specific foods to be effectively absorbed by the body. I’ve tried a lot of recipes and finally found my own formula for what is, in my opinion, the tastiest golden milk.

Ingredients

2 Tablespoons powdered or fresh Turmeric Root -I prefer fresh

(found in many health food stores or here if you want to support an amazing farmer)

Four cups coconut milk-I use it out of a carton but you can use canned

2 Tablespoons coconut cream

1 Tablespoon coconut oil

1 teaspoon black pepper

Maple Syrup to your taste

Optional: teaspoon of fresh or powdered ginger -my body doesn’t enjoy ginger so I leave this out

Steps to Make Golden Milk

Combine everything in a pot on the stove (if you have glass that is preferable to metal) and heat for 10-15 minutes at a steady simmer. Strain through a fine sieve and enjoy hot! You can store this in the fridge for up to 3-4 days and the cold concoction is delicious as a dressing. Sometimes I will thin it with a little bit of safflower oil and use it on salads, as dips for veggies or a sauce on wraps and sammies. It’s a truly versatile recipe. If you don’t like coconut you can replace it with any other milk, just make sure you have some fat in the milk. Our body needs fat to transport the turmeric and convert it to a form our bodies can actually use. The black pepper is also vital because it vastly increases the bio-availability of curcumin so don’t skip this ingredient! A little bit of this tonic everyday will reap wonderful benefits for your body! Try it out and let me know what you think! I love hearing from readers and always welcome you ideas, insights and experiences!
